Power down
Make sure that everyone who is away from a computer for more than two hours shuts down completely. The surge of energy needed to power up is still way less energy than keeping the computer running for long periods of time.

Move your family game night outside
Instead of holding family game night indoors, move the whole activity outdoors. Invite friends and family or keep it just between yourselves. Either way, you’ll have a fun time interacting with each other and being unplugged for the night.

Safeguard storm drains
Don't litter. Trash tossed carelessly outside often washes into storm drains, which empty into rivers and streams that eventually flow to the oceans. Pollution is a growing problem for all the Earth's ocean and its wildlife.

Share books
The next time you have the impulse to buy a new book to read, borrow it from the library or a friend instead of buying a new copy. Sharing books is a great way to reduce waste and reuse materials.

Move away from sunlight
Make sure the fridge is not situated in an area that receives direct sunlight. For every degree above 70 degrees, your fridge uses up 2.5% more energy so don’t expose it to unnecessary heat.

Burn correctly
Campfires are ubiquitous with summer, but before you pile on the wood scraps for that bonfire, be sure you’re using safe wood and fire starters. Only use newspaper, dry kindling, or organic fire starters and avoid painted and treated wood.

Set up a rainwater harvesting system in your backyard. While summer may not seem like the ideal time to do this, we say take advantage of the warmer weather to get this DIY project done. Then you’ll have plenty of water to use throughout the year.

Spend an evening looking at the stars
Lay down a blanket or find yourself a comfortable chair. No major work required. Simply find a spot with minimal light pollution and sit outside for a little star-gazing. Check EarthSky’s meteor shower guide for expected meteor showers.

Arctic in the office
If your office feels like the arctic and most of your colleagues agree with you then consider approaching management to reduce air conditioning in the office space.

Cruise control
Turn on cruise control, especially if you are driving on a highway. Cruise control helps maintain fuel efficiency by helping your vehicle move at a constant speed.

Bubbles are a lot of fun, but no need to spend a lot of money on little bottles of special bubbles. Combine a gallon of water with 2/3 cup of blue Dawn dish soap and 3 Tbsp. of glycerin for easy bubble refills that last all summer long!

Cool and easy
Air conditioning can offer much-needed respite from the heat and can make sweaty nights bearable, but be sensitive to overuse. Turning up the thermostat a few degrees on your AC is a great way to save tons of cash while making the planet a cooler place at the same time.

Drink, but don’t waste water. Your body needs water to stay healthy and hydrated. So you need to drink water. Don’t waste it though. Any “leftover water” can be used to water plants, give to your pets, etc. Just be aware of what you are doing and you will probably save quite a bit.

Use reusable straws
With summer’s higher temperatures come cravings for cold drinks — from iced coffee to pressed juices — making it the perfect time to try out a reusable straw and help save the planet. There are many options on the market, made from bamboo, silicone, glass and more, and in several shapes and sizes. Or drink straight from the glass.

Have a potluck get-together. Invite family and friends over for a picnic or backyard party. Ask them each to bring a specific food item (in a reusable container) along with their own dinnerware, cups, etc. This way you’ll have a great mix of foods and drinks. Plus, there will be very little clean up or waste afterward.

Dry outside
Get a clothes rack to dry your clothes. Air drying helps your clothes last longer. You know all that lint you take out from the dryer is actually part of the clothes right?

Look for eco-friendly materials
Look out for more natural fibers - go for cotton over polyester. Not only do they feel a lot nicer when you wear them, but don't contain things like microfibers that go into our water and into marine life when we wash our clothes.

Recycle used oil and tires from lawn and garden equipment. If you have a need for large lawn and garden equipment, such as tillers or chainsaws, you can reduce waste (and save money!) by renting or borrowing the equipment.
